How weight painting makes clothes move naturally

Weight painting decides which bones of the skeleton move each part of a model. On clothing, it's what makes a sleeve bend with the elbow or a coat swing with the hips.

Bad weighting is easy to spot: clothing that stays stiff while the body moves, or that stretches strangely during animations. Good weighting is invisible, because the clothing simply moves the way you'd expect.

It's one of the most time-consuming parts of custom clothing, and one of the most important for a polished result.

Clothing with loose parts, such as coats and skirts, needs the most careful weighting because it moves more than tight-fitting items.

When clothing looks stiff in game, weighting is usually the first thing we check and fix.
